Format and Create a MS DOS 98 Bootable Pen Drive/USB Stick

If you want to boot your system using a USB stick with a MS DOS environment, you can easily do so by following the steps mentioned by me below. A MS DOS USB stick can be very useful at times, mostly if you want to update your BIOS this can be very handy and is probably the best method.

Note: Your computer must support booting from a USB stick/Removable media [If it does not enter your BIOS setup check for preferred boot media and select "Removable media" as the 1st preferred boot method, save the settings and reboot for PC for the changes to take effect.]

Your selected USB stick would get formatted and all data will get erased, so take a backup of your data before you proceed.

Steps to Create a MS DOS 98 Bootable Pen Drive/USB Stick

1. Download and install HP USB Format Tool by clicking here. [The tool is needed to format your USB disk and make a MS DOS bootable disk using the MS DOS system files below, alternatively you can also use this small utility to format your USB sticks.]

2. Download the Windows 98 system files by clicking here. [The zip file contains all the required system files for creating a bootable USB stick, download and extract all these files into one single folder.]

3. Connect the USB stick to your computer.

4. Open the HP USB Format Tool and select the USB stick you want to create the MS DOS bootable disk.

5. Now under File System select "FAT32" from the drop down list and check the box "Create a DOS startup disk" in the Format Options and select the folder you extracted the Windows 98 system files to in STEP 2.

6. Now press "Start" and a warning message should appear stating all data on the disk will get erased, click yes to proceed further.

7. Your USB stick should now start getting formatted, all the MS DOS system files will get copied to the USB stick during the formatting process.

8. You will now receive a dialogue confirming that the disk has been formatted and other details about the USB disk. You have now created a bootable USB stick, you can now boot your system using the USB stick.

9. If you want to have CD-ROM support while using the USB stick copy the files you extracted to the folder in STEP 2 including the CD-ROM folder, if you copied all the files you will also have mouse support and other useful functions while using the bootable USB stick.
