[How To] Clean Broken Shortcuts In Windows 7

Broken shortcut cleaner
Broken Shortcuts are often found after you uninstall a program or delete some file from your system. Broken shortcuts can sometimes irritate you and slow down your system if they are present in large numbers. The Windows server 2003 resource kit has an useful utility in it called Chklnks.exe, which can help you clean all broken shortcuts from your system. You do not need to install the program for it to work, its portable. The program scans your system for Broken shortcuts and will then display a list of broken shortcuts in your system and then give you the option to select and delete all the shortcuts from your system in one shot.

I frequently use this program to scan for broken shortcuts in my system. I'm pretty sure almost all will be having some broken shortcuts in your system. The utility is very small and as I said above its portable. It runs on Windows XP, Vista and 7. The size of the application is just 355 KB, which will be very handy for you. You don't need to download the entire resource pack, the Chklnks.exe tool is extracted and available for download here.

Now lets have a look at some screenshots which illustrates how the tool works:

When you start the program it will show up like the screen below :

  1. I tried it on windows 7 sp1,
It finds a lot of dead links, but doesn't seem to delete them, but afterwards doesn't find them again, but I still have tons of dead links in my start menu ...

  2. @Anonymous :If you immediately scan after cleaning the broken shortcuts the software won't find any because there aren't any broken shortcuts left. Try after some days or after uninstalling a software.
