[How to] Prevent Your Computer from Hindering Broadband Speed

broadband
When most people are asked what may be the problem with their slow broadband internet connection, the first thing they complain about is their ISP. They either complain about their ISP being bad or about the network not being good in their area. One thing very few people complain about is the speed of their computer and the reality is that this is often the root cause for most slow broadband internet connection.

As someone who specializes in helping people enjoy their broadband internet, I have had to deal with my own share of problems when helping people resolve their speed problems and I have learned quite a lot in the process. In this article I will be sharing some of my favorite tips to help you prevent your computer from hindering your broadband speed. I hope they work for you!

Monitor and Regulate Applications Using Your Internet Connection

One major thing most of us don’t know is that the reason for our internet connection being slow isn’t because our ISP is having a problem nor because the service in our area isn’t good. Sometimes, the reason our internet connection is so slow is because there are several applications in the background trying to connect to the internet and download/upload files, and most of the times, this process can do a lot to influence our internet speed.

You can ensure your computer is faster and that as a result your broadband speed is unaffected, by monitoring and regulating, background applications using your internet connection, so you have an idea, this can be your antivirus, Windows Updates, your wallpaper application etc.

Make Sure Your Computer is Always Fast and Clean

You can also prevent your computer from making your internet slow and hindering your broadband speed by ensuring it is always clean and fast. This can be achieved using several means. One great way to do this is by cleaning up your desktop regularly and by removing icons you don’t need. You should also make sure you are regularly uninstalling software applications you don’t need and that you are backing up large video and audio files to an external drive so they don’t end up hampering your computer speed.

Format Your Computer Every 6 - 12 Months

A major, but sometimes difficult, step I take every once in a while to ensure I’m always getting the best from my computer and internet connection in every respect is formatting my computer regularly. I make it a duty to format my computer every 6 to 12 months and whenever my computer is formatted it becomes faster, and as a result my internet also becomes faster.

Mind you, I’m not trying to tell you to adapt the same span because it can be a little bit inconvenient for you. However, you can easily format your system every 1 – 2 years, or any time span that is convenient for you. The main point is to ensure your computer is fast and productive, so you should quickly format it if it starts to become slow.

  1. I use Ubuntu with Linux system. It is a free download form net. I put it onto a memory stick for my USB plug ins. I ran it from the plug in stick until I decided to install it permanently. I dual booted it. That means, when I turn on my computer, it asks me, Windows 7 or Ubuntu 11.10? Every time! because it runs so smooth and never seems to get viruses, Trojans, etc, and never seems to load the hard drive, I always choose Ubuntu. The first screen is not that pretty, and is so "functional" as to be almost awkward at first, but by changing the background picture for a more friendly colourful one, I have been able to remedy this. I find Ubuntu 11/10 to be very fast, very functional, and effective, It allows me to concentrate more on computing, less on 'frills" . I am still waiting for the "Bill" for using this fine product, but it never comes! For folks with less "disposable income" and perhaps two or more computer users, this is really cost effective! All the software comes free with the down load, the libreOffice programs are actually more effective, come with full easy to understand instructions on board and even will convert documents to Microsoft compatible formats at the click of a button! Astounding array of free software is really something to behold, especially the Science programs and can give kids the "edge" in school!

  2. what a load of rubbish. This article does nothing to explain how or why changes can amke a difference, what systems it makes a difference to, or what particular programs/settings can cause problems. Sure a computer can be slow and cause issues. Most of teh problems are built iunto Windows apps so that they each have an "update" feature that runs in the background, conveniently prompting you when an update is available. if you have windows, a scanning app, pdf viewer, printer software, digital camera software, phone software, and some "utility" apps such as dvd players, etc, this can soon run into 1 dozen or more "update" applications starting when you run your computer. The sooner m$ and m$ conpatible software does away with this the better - move to a model like linux, and there is one software update manager that asks each channel if there are any subscribed updates. one updater, one process, one click to say "yes please, install the listed updates for my printer, office apps, pdf viewer, dvd software, phone app, music player app, and get the 20mbytes and finish it while I work and make it vailable immediately. Or you could stick with windows, 60mbyte pdf, 56mbyte itunes, 250mbyte printer, 60mbyte office update and wait an afternoon, then require two or more reboots to complete the updates. I'm a sys admin, and I completely hate m$oft for the update process and speed. Give me a *nix system any day.
