WhatsApp is a cross platform messenger currently available for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Nokia and Windows phone 7.5 (Mango). WhatsApp allows you to exchange messages with your contacts, which we can use as an alternative to SMS/MMS. You can send unlimited messages to your friends using WhatsApp, practically there is no limit on the number of messages sent.
Features of WhatsApp
The user interface of WhatsApp is very simple and clean, the best part is your messages are delivered instantly. You can not only send and receive messages but also pictures, audio files and voice notes for free.
The app also has a Share Location feature which lets you instantly share location with your friends. WhatsApp utilizes your internet data connection plan - 3G/EDGE or Wi-Fi. You don't need to create a username, your number acts as your identity and add buddies to your list, WhatsApp automatically adds buddies to your list from your phone-book. You don't need to remember any PIN for adding friends like on BBM.
You can even send international messages to your friends, saving big on international SMS costs or start a closed group in which you can chat with multiple friends. You don't need to log-in and log-out of WhatsApp, the app is always on and connected with push notifications, even if your device is turned off due to battery drain or for any other reason, you receive offline messages when you open the app next time.
You can update your Status to notify your contacts, if you're available or busy or set your own custom message.
Below is the neat, simple and powerful UI of WhatsApp, which offers a clean threaded conservation. A single green check/tick mark indicates that the message has been successfully delivered to the server and a double-check mark indicates that the message has been delivered to the device of the chat partner. The second screenshot is the favorites list, which displays the total number of contacts.
You can control the app behavior, block unwanted contacts, manage and change settings from the settings menu. The Usage Statistics calculator gives you a clear idea on how much data WhatsApp has used over the time and reset it accordingly. Though it is recommended that you have an unlimited data internet connection while using WhatsApp, it is noticed that WhatsApp has a very minimal impact on your data usage.
Now taking about the pricing, WhatsApp is very cheap, just 1.99$ per year, with the first year absolutely free, I would pay my friends subscription charges if he is not willing to do so. The subscription charges are nothing compared to your mobile carrier charges for SMS, so if you're a heavy SMS user you got to have WhatsApp on your phone.

WhatsApp is now available for Nokia S40 devices but only some phones are supported at the moment. Here is the list of supported devices - Nokia C3-00, Nokia C3-01, Nokia X2-01, Nokia X3-02, Nokia X2-00, Nokia Asha: 201, 300, 302 and 303.
