Fix For Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini ST15i Overheating Issue

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini ST15i Overheating FixOkay, so you bought a SE Xperia Mini and you have overheating issues with the phone. This is a known issue, but there is no fix in the latest update by Sony. I’ve read they have a calibration fix at the authorized service center, but on visiting they asked me to wait for a week. Sorry I love my phone and can’t stay away from it for a week because I didn't have a backup at that moment. So here’s how I did it myself with the help of a small script from XDA.

Why do the Capacitive Buttons get Triggered Automatically?

The back and menu buttons get automatically triggered due to overheating and the sensitivity of the buttons.

The buttons are extra sensitive so they get triggered automatically when the phone gets heated when you connect the phone to a charger, computer, Wi-Fi, when calling etc.

Have a look at this video, uploaded by alvinlu1 which addresses this issue:

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini ST15i Overheating Issue.

If you have this issue, read this tutorial in which I’ll show you how to fix this issue by downgrading, rooting and then installing a small script which will fix it.

Disclaimer: Utmost care has been taken while writing this tutorial and I’ve tested every software/script involved in the process below. Flash/Root the phone at your own risk; I’m not responsible for any damages that may occur.

How to Fix Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini ST15i Overheating/Capacitive Buttons Issue

  1. Check your phones firmware version. If it is 4.0.2.A.0.42 or lower skip to- How to Root your phone.

  2. You cannot root your phone if the build no. is 4.0.2.A.0.62.

  3. If you are on 4.0.2.A.0.62- the latest update as of now, you’ll have to downgrade your phone's firmware. Here’s how to do it:

How to Downgrade SE Xperia Mini ST15i Software

Refer this link for tutorial with screenshots on how to downgrade your phone’s software.

  1. Register for an account at WotanServer.

  2. Now click here and then scroll to the bottom of the page and download “USB Flash Driver” and “WotanClient”.

  3. Now install the USB Flash Driver and WotanClient on your computer.

  4. Note: Make sure your phones battery is fully charged.

  5. Now open WotanClient and then follow the instructions given on the screen.

  6. Connect your phone to the PC by pressing the “Volume down Key” and then the WotanClient will automatically detect your phone.

  7. In phone settings tab click on “Enable Advanced Settings” and select “4.0.2.A.0.42” firmware and select your language and click on Next.

  8. In the settings tab enter your login credentials you used to register on the site, click update and select “Global” as FTP server.

  9. Now the update will begin and the log will be displayed in the phone processing tab.

  10. Note: Do not disconnect your phone during the update and make sure the computer power does not go off.

  11. It will take some time before your phone is updated. (Around 1 hour on broadband, depending on your Internet connection.)

  12. After the phone has successfully updated, unplug the phone from your computer and power on the phone.

How to Root Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini ST15i

Note: Rooting will void your phones warranty.

  1. Download the zergRush exploit files and extract them to a folder on your desktop.

  2. Now download the ADB drivers by clicking here and install them on your computer.

  3. Enable “Unknown Sources” from (Menu>Settings>Applications).

  4. Enable “USB Debugging” from (Menu>Settings>Applications>Development).

  5. Plug in your phone to the computer with the help of a USB cable.

  6. Skip any PC companion prompts and close it on your PC.

  7. Make sure you're logged onto your computer using a administrator account and disable antivirus protection for the time being.

  8. Open the folder where you have extracted the zergRush exploit files and open “runme.bat”.

  9. After running the file you will see a command prompt window and your phone will be rooted in less than a minute.

  10. Now power on your phone.

How to install GScript Lite and TouchPanel.sh

  • Download and install GScript Lite from the Google Play Store.

  • Download TouchPanel.sh.

  • Open Gscript lite and close it, now browse your memory card and search for the folder “gscript

  • Now move the download touchpanel.sh file to the gscript folder.

  • Open gscript>Menu>Add Script>Load File>Select touchpanel.sh

  • Now your phone will switch off, power on your phone and now VOILA! The problem is gone.

  • You may confirm it by connecting your phone to the computer and tethering it or by using Wi-Fi etc. and the problem won’t reproduce now at any temperature.

I hope Sony addresses and fixes this issue in the next/ICS update as soon as possible.

  2. Hi, great instructions thanks for posting. I have downgraded the phone to the 042 software, it is the next step that is causing me problems. How do I install the ADB drivers on my pc once they are downloaded? This seems to be where I am getting stuck.
    thanks

    1. After you have enabled USB debugging and connected your phone to the PC, the drivers usually get automatically installed or if you've flashed your phone earlier using PC companion its already there on your PC. So now proceed further and root your device with ZergRush exploit and then install the script.

    2. Once again thanks for your help I think I am almost there now. The last barrier I have relates to GScript Lite, after installing GScript Lite and opening it no folder is created on the memory card and hence there is nowhere to save the the script to. I have tried creating the gscript folder myself but this doesn't work either? Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    3. OK, check whether your phone is rooted by looking for the Superuser app, if its there then try re-installing the GScript lite app on your phone and then open it and look for the folder in the memory card.

    4. I am not sure if that did it or restarting the phone with the folder I had created manually but now I have applied the script and so far so good the over heating issue seems to be fixed! 1 hour of video music and no problems so far. I will update in a couple of days but now the st15i seems to be operating at it's full potential. Last question.... Can I reapply the 4.0.2.A.0.62. upgrade or will that overwrite the overheat fix? I will update this note in a few days if the phone is still working with out issues so other users have extra confirmation it works. Thanks again for posting this and your help!

    5. My pleasure Snowboarder. I've read that updating the phone through OTA/from the phone itself to 4.0.2.A.0.62 does not revoke the root permissions but then too I would not recommend doing so as there are not major changes in the update. You should wait for the ICS update to come in my opinion.

    6. Just to say after 10 days the fix is still working fine so this seems to have sorted it. I think I will wait until the ICS upgrade rather than going back to 4.0.2.A.0.62. Many thanks again, a very clear set of instructions and they do actually fix the problem!

    1. Its working smooth here Hansen. The above method is a workaround for the issue with capacitive buttons, the touchscreen should be working fine.

      Delete
    2. I just realized that the touchscreen issue only comes up when its charging. as soon as i unplug the phone it works just fine. so i guess its not a hardware issue as well...
But when its charging it always takes several swipes to change the homescreen and its impossible to use the long press to add widgets for example. also, its almost impossible to write texts bc the keyboard is very inaccurate. very strange indeed...
      thx

    3. Yes maybe because the phone gets heated to a very high temperature when its charging so that may occur occasionally. Hopefully Sony will solve these issues with the ICS update which is expected to arrive at the end of May or the 1st week of June.

    1. I've written a step by step guide to resolve this issue with your mini, follow the steps correctly and your problem will get solved.

      Delete
    2. First I installed Android SDK Tool and then installed ADB Drivers using the SDK Manager (just select Google USB Driver Package)
      http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
http://www.androidtipsnapps.com/andr...db-driver.html (this seems to be a guide for the older version SDK, hence you will notice few changes).

(Not sure if this method is necessary as I also noticed an alternate .. install the drivers directly ..(could not try this) :
      http://www.mediafire.com/?6u1zl54w3jnvvax

I downgraded my phone from .62 to .42 with flashtool (wotanserver is now a paid service)...
      FlashTool Setup:
      http://uploaded.to/file/g3uingdb
      .42 STOCK ROM:
      http://www.mediafire.com/?uboo3lrdxnoeldn

Installd FlashTool and copied the rom file to the install directory and pasted it in
      C:\Flashtool\firmwares folder.

Opend Flash Tool and clicked the flash button (lightning symbol)
      Choose "flashmode".
In the next prompt I choose the ROM file and clicked OK.

Another prompt came telling me to connect the device.
With my phone turned Off, I connected the USB to the computer and while pressing and holding the volume down button, connected the USB cable to the phone. The tool detected the phone and started flashing.
Flashing Completed and I disconnected and turned ON my phone.
Then I enabled UsbDebugging and Unknown sources from the phone settings.
"USB DEBUGGING" from Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development
"UNKNOWN SOURCES" from Menu -> Settings -> Applications

Then I downloaded the rooting kit
      http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...1&d=1321435888
and extracted it to a folder (any folder).
I connected the phone and ran the "RUNME.bat" file that was extracted from the download.

Once the phone rebooted, I installed GScript Lite App in the phone (from Google Play store).
Then I ran the Application, and when it asked for su permission, i granted it.
Then I closed the application. Unplugged, restarted the phone and replugged (Not necessary .. did this because the gscript folder did not appear)..
I downloaded the TouchPanel.sh file (Please find attached the zipped file) and pasted it into the gscript folder in the phone SD Card. Then I opened GScript again and clicked on the add button and selected this script.
The script ran showing some stderr messages and my phone shutdown.
I started it again and now the issue with the buttons was gone. What a relief.

(i did first try to type in the script .. and when i ran it via gscript, the phone shutdown, but the issue did not get solved (tried it twice) .. so i used the touchpanel.sh file directly and ...well got lucky the third time)

I also updated the firmware to .62 version via SEUS and still the phone is working properly.
Thanks to all for your help.....

      Needs su:true

My question is, what happens when the ICS shows up. Will be be an OTA or companion update. And regardless of whether it is an OTA update or one that has to be applied via Companion, what happens to the fix? Will the ICS update incorporate the fix? Just a little care and patience and the result is there. Just one thing: to bring up the folder "gscript" in the sd card, just click "add script" (with the right button) and "load". Instantly the folder appears.

  71. Great guide! but I run into a problem at the end.
Gscript won't create a folder in my memory card.
I tried using Gscript several times, rebooting the cell, rebooting the pc, disconnecting and connecting the USB cable, reinstalling Gscript etc.

Anyone who has the same problem or an answer?
    Thx in advance

    1. Simple solution just create a new folder on the sd card , rename it gscript and place the TouchPanel.sh. in it. I had the same problem and this is what I did and worked for me in one go. just follow the rest of the instructions.

  72. Just fixed my sony ericsson xperia mini st15i using the method you provided
and it worked. The only thing is that I used another method of downgrading
the software as the wotanclient server site was not operable, but other than
that everything went ok. Thought I might have to throw this phone but due to
your expertise I was able to revive it. Thanks so much. I just have two
questions. can I upgrade the software back to .62 using PC Companion, and I
was also thinking of installing CyanogenMod 7.1. can you give me a little
insight on this. And would the script be removed if I installed any one of
the things mention and the problem come back. Once again thank you so much.

    1. You can upgrade to .62 by OTA, don't update your phone using PC companion. The ICS update for your Xperia Mini would be out shortly so you should wait and update to ICS 4.0.

  80. Hello! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us :-) This was already familiar to me from xda developers forum, but no one explained this fix so smoothly and in easy steps as you do!
Now I am still waiting ICS update to see if touch sensitivity will be solved with it, but just in case if problem will still be there after ICS update, I have one question for you: When I enter service menu of my Xperia Mini (*#*#7378423#*#* --> Service Info/Configuration) I see that Rooting status is "Bootloader unlock allowed: No". Also my current firmware is 4.0.2.A.0.62. Could I still root my phone and downgrade to 0.42 following your steps even if I have "Bootloader unlock allowed: No"? I think I have red somewhere there are some problems/limitations if "Bootloader unlock allowed: No"? Thank you. Best regards, Slaven

  100. Few Comments
    1. If you have a 64 bit WinXp/7 , then to install adb , you need to install jdk 1.7 64 bit and when you install the android sdk ensure that the jdk in use is 64 bit. You might have to set the java_home variable .
    http://laslow.net/2012/05/10/android-adb-on-windows-x64/

    2. A gscript folder in sdcard is NOT necessary. All gscript needs is to find the touchpanel.sh script. You can put in anywhere in the sdcard, just specify that path in the gscript
