Microsoft has unveiled the beta version of the next operating system codenamed Windows 8 in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012 event. The Windows 8 developer preview was released back in September which gave a sneak peak of the new operating system Microsoft is betting on.

The operating system is designed to work on desktops, laptops, tablets and even smartphones. Microsoft is mainly targeting the tablet section and is offering Windows for ARM microprocessors.

Steven Sinofsky said that the company has made over 100,000 code changes to the operating system since the developer preview was launched, this clearly proves that they have worked hard to fix bugs and are ready to face challenge against iOS and Android when it comes out to the public.

The final version of Windows 8 is expected to release late this year. The future of Microsoft strongly relies on the success of Windows 8, but the question arises will businesses and consumers upgrade to the operating system? As they are many who are still using the age-old Windows XP operating system.

The major changes in the operating system are the new user interface named Metro which resembles the Windows Phone 7.5 UI for smartphones, Internet Explorer 10 and USB 3.0 support.

Machines capable of running Windows 7 can run Windows 8 on their system, the minimum system requirements for running Windows 8 are:

1 Gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
1 Gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.

The beta which Microsoft calls the Consumer Preview clearly indicates that the beta is aimed for the public.
