WebP is a new image format by Google, which provides lossy compression of images. According to Google 65% of the content available on the internet is in the form of image media. WebP images are 39.8% smaller in comparison to jpeg images. WebP is currently supported by a variety of tools including Google Chrome, the Google Chrome Frame plugin is available for Internet Explorer and Opera 11.10. A WebP file consists of VP8 image data, and a container based on RIFF.
